Basic shimmimg 101 for any AEG.

Well bad shimming can be a big problem and to fix it, well that can be a even bigger problem.

What is shimming? Well shimming is placing Shims between the gears and the bushing, to help and properly align the gears with each other. Not all gearboxs are the same, and you may need more Shims on one side or the other. This is also true with AEG that have seen use, when I Shim a AEG, I always like to place a new set of bushing in. That helps to start on fresh ground you could say.

Now how do I know if my AEG is not Shimmed good?

Well you AEG may sound like your dad just ran the cat over. Other items are:

Piston locks up, Stripped piston and gears, poor ROF, Hot motor.

First thing is to get your tools and a clean place to work. Next remove your gearbox from the AEG, after you have done that. You should remove one side from your gearbox, that will let you see the gears and the inner working of the gearbox. Next remove all that stuff, but no need to remove the trigger switch.

Next clean the gearbox of all the old grease, get a few Q-tips to help with that job. Now after that you can start with Shimming. One thing, you will need to buy some new grease, and no auto grease will not work here. I have found that choke and gun grease works the best, most Wal-mart stores have it. Or a white grease will also work fine.

Now to the Shimming and gears, start with the Spur gear, now are you asking what is a Spur gear. Well it is the bigger of the three gears that sits in the center. Start with the bottom of the gear start with a .2 mm or .3 mm Shim, with a AEG that has seen a lot of use, you may need a .5 mm Shim.

Now I know your asking .2mm shim & .5mm shim, what is he talking about. Well like most things in our world, shims come in a number of sizes. Most internet or mail order air soft shops will have a shim kit that you can buy for a few bucks. One shop that always has them is AEX. On the top of the gear try a .3mm and a .5mm shim and now move on to the next gear.

The Sector Gear, that is the one at the top that pushes the piston. With that one try a .5mm and a .2mm together and on the top try a .5mm, now again you may need to add in a .2mm or change a .3mm to a .5mm if the AEG has been used a lot. But just try the basic shims first.

Next and last is the Bevel gear the one that I think does the most work, this is the gear that the motor turn and then it turns the rest. Try 2x .2mm Shims and a .3mm on top, but I have found that a .5mm even with a new AEG and new bushings works the best.

Well now it’s time to see if you got it or need to start over.

Put the gearbox back together, but only with the gears. Keep the rest of the stuff out (Piston, Cylinder, Cylinder head, Tappet) Put ALL the screws back into the gearbox, now it’s time to test it. Place a small screw driver up inside the motor hole and try and move the gear, if you got it the gears should spin freely. If it spins freely and does not lock up, your ready to put your gearbox back together. But if things do not work out then you need to look at a few things.

One things that does happen is that the Sector gear maybe ridding on the Spur Gear and you may need to re-shim that one. Try and move up in size of the shim. If a .2mm does not work then move onto a .3mm shim.

Now if you got it and the gears spin freely and with no grinding then its time to put some new grease on the ends of the gear and on the shims and put your gearbox together. Now it does not take a lot of grease to do the job, to much grease will slow things down some. Not much but some, until the grease wears in.

Well that’s Shimming 101.…
